MRA Smokes Track At Pikes Peak International Raceway
The Motorcycle Roadracing Association moved south to Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colorado, for the second racing weekend of the 2011 season. May 21 and 22 turned out to be quite a racing weekend, too.
With racers working hard through the entire 1.2-mile track and the Dimick brothers—Dalton and Colter—making sure the field knew they were here to stay, race fans were treated to a weekend of fast, exciting times.
“Pikes Peak is a different place,” said MRA spokesman Jim Wilson. “It’s a great place. They have nice facilities. It’s nice that everyone can be in a garage. And because it’s a small track, it’s great for spectators—you can see pretty much the whole track, and it’s easy to move around to watch different parts of the track. It’s a very good spectator track.”
For all those same reasons, Wilson said, it might be the least favorite track of the racers.
“Because it’s short and has so many turns, racers have to work through the whole course,” he said. “The straights are pretty short, so there’s nowhere to rest and let tires cool down. With all the curves, tires get pretty hot and start to get a little greasy. It definitely makes for some exciting races though.”
Greasy tire or not, there was some great racing going on.
In Race of the Rockies, Dalton Dimick once again got the holeshot on his BMW S1000RR, with Shane Turpin and the younger Dimick brother, Colter, hot on his heels. Thrilling the crowds, Colter Dimick, riding a Yamaha R6, made a quick move past Turpin on the big BMS Ducati 1098R, and the Dimick brothers began to pull away at the front of the field. The pace was blistering, with MRA #1 plate Dan Turner aboard his GSX-R1000 close behind Turpin, and AMA privateer Josh Galster right on Turner’s rear wheel.
But, by the forth lap, Turpin had put his head down and was pushing Colter to the max on the R6. As the younger Dimick struggled to hang onto second place, Turpin made his move late in the infield and came onto the front banking focused on Dalton Dimick and the big BMW. Within just two more laps Turpin caught and passed the older Dimick brother, and began to stretch out a small gap on the pair. Galster, meanwhile, was all over Turner, showing him a wheel and looking for a place to pass. He finally found it late in the race, made his move and held onto forth for the finish.
The final results had Shane “Tornado” Turpin taking home another win, with Dalton and Colter Dimick rounding out the podium. Galster and Turner finished 4th and 5th respectively.
The Dimick brothers have been putting on a show for the spectators this year. Dalton only recently introduced little brother Colter, an experienced motocrosser, to road racing. Newbie or no, Colter has picked up the new discipline at lightning speed under his brother’s guidance, and the two of them have served notice they are a force to be reckoned with.
It wasn’t just the big dogs grabbing the spotlight at Pikes Peak. Shannon Mohan continued his fierce performance, grabbing three wins, and three other strong finishes. Mohan’s effort kept him at the top of the Chicane Track Days Clubman Points Championship.
Of course, there were other outstanding performances as well, with more than 100 racers competing.
“It was a really good weekend,” Wilson said. “Our corner workers did an extraordinary job all weekend. The weather was great, we had a pretty decent crowd, and we had some great races. We can’t really ask for much more than that.
The third round of races is set for June 11 and 12 at High Plains Raceway, east of Byers, CO.
As always, race tickets are just $10 at the gate, kids under 12 get in free. All US military members get in free with valid ID. 2-for-1 gate entry coupons are available at most Colorado motorcycle dealerships.
