Glencoe Campground Sold For $8.6 Million
The Glencoe Camp Resort just east of Sturgis, South Dakota, has been sold to a California buyer.
Owner Gary Lippold reportedly sold the campground and the newer “Rockin’ The Rally Amphitheater” for just shy of $8.6 million in January, 2009. Property filings show the buyer to be Devorah Lopez of California, and indicate that Sean Clark of Nevada will operate both venues.
None of the involved parties commented on the sale.
Glencoe opened in 1983 as campground but has grown over the past 25 years to over 1000 acres that include the Sturgis Dragway, Thunder Road, Thunder Dome, and the Kick Start Travel Center. The sale reportedly does not include the drag strip, Thunder Road, Thunder Dome or the travel center.
The property Lippold sold had been in his family for over 100 years, and has become a favorite campground among Sturgis regulars. It is unclear how, or if, the ownership change will affect the operation of the facilities.
Through the years at Glencoe
I have stayed at Glencoe 12 times since '98. I miss seeing Gary and his mom working at the main gate 'restaurant' every year. He hired local girls to run it and everyone was on a first name basis. Before Full Throttle, the gas station and Thunder Road it was truly like camping out in the middle of no where. We could have camp fires, the 'parade' was the entertainment for the evening. I'm glad I took a lot of pictures of how much fun it was in the 'day'. Nothing ever came close to burning with the campfires, period. I realize that is a state ban, but, people I bring with me think no campfires in a campground is a joke and it is. But, the biggest change for the worse is the rotten food/service in Glencoe. Ask anyone, don't take my word for it. They used to send out packets to the repeat campers telling of improvements during the 'off season' along with reservation forms signed by Gary himself. Now, you're just a number with new people working there every year.

Glencoe Sucked
I for one stayed at Glencoe this year and I paid the same as I did last year I ask if they were going to have any concerts because they were not posted on their web site I was told yes there were some concerts but they just did not have time to post them on the web I got to Glencoe and found out no concert.
The venders were put out in the back yard where no one could see them the employees were told they were going to be paid $10/hr but got paid min. wage they had under age kids working in the bar and after the bar closed around 2:30am the same kids showed up at my camp site drunk on their ass.
One vender had some dance poles one was in the pavilion on display and without her permission they pulled it out and let any one that wanted to use it do so. The one pole in the pavilion that the owner liked has come up missing and she has talked to the owner and he said that is your problem not his.
So to make a long story short I will not be going back I feel that they are very dishonest people and refuse to support them.
Glencoe employees payed less than min wage
Most folks working at Glencoe this year were told they would get a big bonus and
All got 16 hr shifts and below min wage.If you stayed and worked 3 weeks you got 1,000.00 for the entire rally.
Glencoe had their family members working underage serving drinks at the bar.
They bought 45K in frozen and canned foods and tried to get a refund from the venders caused they had too much. A trailer of food was loaded and taken to the Oatman Hotel in Arizona...Our best guess is it wont be paid for cause Mr Clark will refuse to pay the bills....
What Are The Glencoe 2009 Concerts?
I'd like to reserve my camping for the Sturgis 2009 Rally at Glencoe but i'm still waiting to see what the concerts will be in 2009. The Buffalo Chip has published at least some of the bands they have in their concert line up. The Rockin The Rally venue is the best place to watch concerts at Sturgis, hopefully the new management will make it better not worse for Sturgis 2009. Sturgis 2009 Concerts
Glencoe campground sale article.
The article about the sale of Glencoe is interesting. We have been staying at Glencoe but weren't going to this year because of being turned off by some management screwups. We just got our new reservation forms and it says it is under new management. Also, they just have camping fees for $140 instead of forcing you to pay more for the rock concerts. We will be there this year! Maybe it will be the most fun bargain of the rally like it used to be!!!!!
